Twilight by Mechante Fille Jim clicked the rewind on his digital tv remote, then paused on the closing smile of the reporter. Older than most field reporters, she was aging gracefully, her pretty mouth and eyes still done up to perfection, only framed now – highlighted, almost – by a spray of wrinkles around each. All smile lines, but Jim knew better than most not to be fooled by them. Tara Summers hated him. Hated most people, in fact. But him more than most. There was no one that either of them could look to more as a measure of their lives, to see what might have been. Jim knew that he was very different than Tara, and hoped that he might have chosen a different route than her if their fates had been switched, but one never knew. So he looked to her, each night on the evening news, to count his blessings. And to remember compassion, because there but for the Grace of God… Jim wondered sometimes if God had anything to do with it, but not very often and not very long. He took this moment every night to remember to be grateful and stay humble, then clicked off the television and moved on. Tonight he left it on longer than usual. He felt a little guilty, wondering if there wasn’t more he could have done, or could still do. He was officially out of the game, but still had plenty of influence. It seemed unfair that, having taken the life Tara had wanted, had felt she deserved, he would now be taking away the only thing she had left herself, and she would never even know until it was too late. Tonight was the last time he would see her face, on the news or in the office. He had retired last month, causing quite a bit of buzz in the industry. Ten years ago he had been the youngest network executive in the business, poised to climb even more social and career ladders. Today, he was the youngest retired network executive, preparing to live out his days on a private estate in a secret location. No one knew that, though, except for Evan, with whom he would share the estate and every other thing in life, until death parted them. ... |
